Mrs. Goldman’s Grade Two Class
Grade Two- 01/24/10 Grade Two spent the day learning about Tu B’Shevat, the Holiday of the Trees which is this Saturday 1/30/10. We talked about the many things that trees provide us…oxygen, shade, fruit, wood, homes for animals, etc and remember how we as Jewish People, do not take anything for granted. I shared a poster that I had made with many pictures from the 2006 Teachers 2 Israel program highlighting a visit to Neot Kedumim, the Biblical Nature Reserve just outside of Jerusalem and to the Mahane Yehuda’s bustling open air market in the heart of the Old City. Children saw pictures of olives growing on trees, an olive press recreated to resemble one that may have been used during the time of the Maccabees, and olive oil and olives of every color for sale in the marketplace. They enjoyed learning about pomegranates, almonds, dates and figs and other things that grow in Israel. We realized that although it is still cold and wintry here, Israel’s spring is beginning and that is why we pray for rain every Shabbat. The children enjoyed reading “Behold The Trees” and creating their own beautiful almond trees to take home. Hopefully, their artwork … Continue reading
From Israel – Wednesday, January 27
Wednesday Evening, January 27, 2010 11 Shevat 5770 We are waiting to board our flight to Israel, leaving from Atlanta, Georgia. The President of the United States is currently giving his State of the Union address which is viewable at one of the other terminals. I have just finished reading an article written by Rabbi Daniel Gordis who made aliyah with his family a number of years ago, and reports on Israeli culture on a blog every month or so. At the end of November he wrote an article entitled “A Requiem for Peoplehood.” He reports a comment that was made to him following a presentation that he gave at a synagogue in Long Island. The woman, who was a member of a liberal congregation, commented that “it never occurred to me that the Jews were a people.” It never occurred to this American born rabbi that Judaism could exist without our believing that we are a people, as first stated by the Pharaoh of Egypt at the beginning of Exodus when he considered the Israelites to be a threat to his nation’s authority. If our enemies consider us a people, why do we have such a difficult time declaring … Continue reading

Mrs. Goldman’s Grade Four Class 01/24/10
Grade Four – 01/24/10 Grade Four reviewed Chapter Six in our curriculum and debated on the chapter title, “Does G-d Care Which Team Wins the Superbowl or World Series?” To answer this question, we had to discuss how sports could be played and enjoyed “Jewishly”. We talked about the importance of good sportsmanship, of “not losing your cool” as Jacob G. stated, being patient with others who may not be the best athletes, recognizing the importance of teamwork, recognizing that it is “WE” who lost or won a game , not “I” as Arieh S. noted, being kind and fair to others and including everyone as Amy F. pointed out….just to name a few ideas. We learned about the importance of taking care of ourselves and keeping healthy and not taking for granted the wonderful physical and mental accomplishments that human beings can make. On one hand, perhaps G-d doesn’t care who wins, as long as the participants worked well as teams, respected one another during and after the game and enjoyed their activity. But on the other hand, G-d likes to see us happy, working together to strive to reach a goal and celebrating our special moments. Maybe in a … Continue reading

Volunteers Needed
Our synagogue has been a bustle of activity over the past few months with Community Learning Days, Jazz Brunches, New Member Breakfasts, Comedy Nights and Coffeehouses. All of this activity has put an increased burden on our limited staff and maintenance crew. To help ensure that we continue to maintain our standards we could use some help in the following areas: Office or clerical work Kitchen organization Clean up of all backrooms and closet areas No experience is necessary and we will welcome volunteers of almost all ages. Community service hours are available for teens. This is a great youth group, Sisterhood or Brotherhood activity. If you are interested in helping out please contact Deb Vozella.
