Pre-Passover Pantry Project
avatar

A letter to the congregation, from Melissa Freed: Did you know that: Demand on food pantries has increased about 20 percent since 2008? Beverly Bootstraps helped more than 900 families with food needs last year? It’s a Jewish tradition to provide for the needy on Purim and Passover? Here’s how you can help: As we celebrate the holiday of Purim, and begin to prepare our homes for Passover, please bring in extra non-perishable food items to support Beverly Bootstraps and Jewish Family Service’s Kosher Food Pantry. A box for donations will be placed outside of the Temple office from Sunday, February 28 (Purim) through Sunday, March 21. You can also purchase and donate scrip, which the pantries use to provide perishable items to their clients. Although all donations are welcome, the pantries specifically request: Kosher dairy or vegetarian non-perishable food items (for Jewish Family Service) Juice boxes (100 percent juice) Individually packaged snacks (including nut- and peanut-free snacks) and granola bars Canned vegetables, fruits, beans, soup, and tuna Cereal, rice, pasta, and sauce Please: No expired food items or items in glass containers. Thank you for supporting this project. Melissa Freed

Used to be that what defined us all was our “word”
avatar

Used to be that what defined us all was our “word”; not sure anymore. What’s changed, or how has it happened? Contracts are made to be broken with so many outs, ambiguities, etc. Risk factors in offerings take up half the documentation and sellers and their agents rely on the “buyer beware” out. Tell me, how in God’s little green acre can Goldman Sachs claim (without giggling)that the product they were selling/recommending to others was o.k. to be shorting themselves as their buyers/clients were ‘sophisticated’ and responsible for their own behavior? Is that what was told them at HBS or is that the new norm? Now we have a well respected/regarded Senator opting out of running for his next term because he’s fed up with the shenanigans of his fellow office holders. The gridlock, infighting, finger-pointing, ad nauseum is almost insane/inane  as we head for the toilet.  So I ask my fellow congregants for comments, suggestions;…..or is this for the grand kids to figure out? In honor of Judaism and Disabilities Month

In Honor of Judaism and Disabilities Month A Blessing for Hearing and Thinking A number of years ago, an eleven year old girl refused to begin her Bat Mitzvah lessons until her parents and I made a plan for the brother’s Bar Mitzvah.  Her brother had been confined to a wheel chair all of his life, and was not able to communicate with others in the same way as you and I can.  Even though he had a multiple of physical and mental ailments that required constant daily care by his parents, he lacked nothing in relation to the love and devotion shown to him by his family – and especially his sister who wanted nothing less for her brother in regards to this life changing rite of passage.  We found a way to honor Jesse’s abilities to feel the texture of the Torah parchment as a recognition of his blessing the Torah by a series of recordings that were triggered by his hand at the appropriate time.  It is this Torah that filled his heart, and hours, along with tears of joy at being able to celebrate the joys in life despite his disabilities.  As I watched him dance … Continue reading

The Horse Whisperer
avatar

The Horse Whisperer By Rabbi Steven J. Rubenstein There is an ancient Jewish tradition whenever a person goes to Israel, it is customary to give them tzedakah as your emissary, to keep them safe on their journey.  The mission is not completed until the funds have been distributed and the person returns securely.  Before leaving for Israel, Lynn and I were given one dollar bills from our respective work places and from friends.  We knew from the outset where we wanted to donate our collection of bills.  However, we were never certain whether or not we would be able to make our delivery in person.  It wasn’t until our last day in Israel that we were given the opportunity to pay a visit to a worthwhile organization that is situated along the Mediterranean Sea between Ceasarea and Tel Aviv.
