Community Learning Day — Sunday, March 21, 2010
avatar

On Sunday, Mar. 21, we welcome Sheldon Low, a new face in Jewish rock, in a concert presented with students in the Temple B’nai Abraham Religious School. As a complement to some Yiddish songs that will be part of the concert, Alan Pierce and Saul Axelrod will hold a discussion on the golden age of Yiddish Radio. To contrast with the concert and the radio, we will again hold a session on Jewish meditation. Join us for this special Community Learning Day!

About TBA’s Community Learning Day

The Community Learning Days are designed to bring all generations of our congregation and the greater North Shore Jewish Community together to enjoy educational programming. The program is free and open to the public. Generally, our Community Learning Days feature one or more special guests complemented by individuals from our community who share their expertise, skill, interest or talent.

This program is generously sponsored by the Alan Kaplan Memorial Enrichment Fund.

March 21 Featured Guests

Sheldon Low, Singer/Songwriter/Jewish Educator

Sheldon Low, Singer/Songwriter/Jewish Educator

On Sunday, March 21, we are excited to have Sheldon Low, the newest face in Jewish music, who performs rock concerts, ‘Light Up Shabbat’ services, and Artist-in-Residency weekends in Jewish communities throughout the United States. Low has an undeniable appeal to youth and family audiences, not only as a musician, singer/songwriter, and entertainer, but most importantly, as a Jewish educator and role model.

Yiddish Radio Project

Alan Pierce and Saul Axelrod, Yiddish Radio Project

Saul Axelrod, our resident Yiddish expert, and TBA member Alan Pierce, President of the Jewish Historical Society of the North Shore, will take us back to the Golden Age of Yiddish radio with a discussion of the rich treasure trove of shows that have been recovered and restored. You will hear delightful commercials as well as excerpts from Rabbi Rubin’s Court of the Air (a Yiddish Judge Wapner) and songs from the Bagelman Sisters (or the Barry Sisters as we know them today).

Nishmat Hayyim, Jewish Meditation

History of Jewish Meditation

Rabbi Joel Hoffman, the Executive Director of Nishmat Hayyim, will present an introduction to yoga, Jewish meditation, and Kabbalah — all in 45 minutes!  It is a sampler class around the theme of happiness and what we want in our lives.  The meditation will combine some “hitbodedut” — silent meditation — and some “hitbonenut” contemplation.
