A Reminder About Our Cemetery
avatar

Now that warm weather has returned and Memorial Day and other civil holidays approach, it is appropriate again to point out some of the customs and rules pertaining to gravesites at TBA’s cemetery. The presence of flowers at funerals and gravesites is distinctly a non-Jewish custom and is actively discouraged, if not prohibited, by the Conservative movement, its Rabbis, and member congregations. TBA Bylaws and cemetery rules prohibit the decoration or marking of any gravesite in any manner, other than with standard gravestones, without specific permission of the Cemetery Trustees.  In particular, no grave may be decorated with plants or flowers or other vegetation, be they live or artificial, potted or planted, or cut and placed in the ground to appear as if they are growing.  Such items will be removed and disposed of by cemetery personnel. The Jewish custom upon visiting the gravesite of a loved one is to pledge tz’dakah, either to a favorite charity of the deceased or to the Temple or cemetery.  (Donations to the cemetery are always useful and appreciated for maintenance and general beautification.)  Some also follow the custom of marking the visit by placing a small stone or pebble on the grave marker.  … Continue reading

Parashat Naso – A Prayer for Prosperity
avatar

Parashat Naso 5770 On May 11, I was invited to be a part of an interfaith panel of clergy discussing, from their individual faith traditions, “how to respond to health and financial difficulties using a spiritual approach.”  Following my reading of this week’s Torah portion, I think that I have discovered at least one response to our current financial woes, or more accurately said, our relationship and feelings towards such hardships.  What Judaism and other religious faiths attempt to do is to put our tzorases into their proper perspective.  My father mentioned to me a Yiddish proverb in reaction to his medical issues that can be used just as accurately when a person is having financial problems.  He translated it for me as:  “Things could be a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse.”  Our cultural traditions teach us to appreciate the moment, even when the moment is a source of fear and trepidation, because there is something to be learned by these emotions along with what brings us joy and contentment.

A Note on Shavuot – Torah is Not All “Business”
avatar

A Note on Shavuot 5770 Torah Is Not All “Business” Tuesday night begins the holiday of Shavuot.  We began a journey fifty days ago, beginning on the Second night of Passover when we counted each day with a measure of grain, looking for the daily blessings in our lives.  During this time I started to write a weekly blog on “Happiness” to help us focus on the blessings that are a part of our world to help sustain us, spiritually, especially when we encounter difficulties that may threaten our sense of balance.  One of the ways that we achieve this ability to stay centered on a religious basis is by studying a new portion of the Bible each week.  On Shavuot we celebrate God giving us that Torah as an act of love and devotion to the Israelite people to help guide them on the right path for a life of peace by ordering how we can achieve satisfaction through our relationships with God, with others, and with ourselves. There are three blessings that a person recites when engaging in the study of the Torah.  These blessings are recited as a preliminary to the morning blessings that jumpstart our day.  … Continue reading
