Eli's Hummus Recipe

Here is Eli’s Hummus recipe from Community Learning Day:

2 cans (19 oz) chickpeas
1/4 – 1/2 can of water — enough to create the consistency of hummus
4-6 cloves garlic, peeled
2 T cumin, heaping
1 T salt
ground pepper
1/2 c tahini paste

Using food processor, blend chickpeas. Add water slowly and blend until mixture is the right consistency. Add garlic and blend again until smooth.
Add spices and blend again. Add tahini and blend until fully combined and smooth.

Variation:
For a lemon hummus, skip the cumin and cut back on the water. Instead, use 2-5 T lemon to taste.

Community Learning Day Sunday May 2, 2010

Celebrate Israel at Temple B’nai Abraham! Join us on Sunday, May 2, for a celebration of all things Israeli. An invited guest will facilitate a discussion about The David Project film, “The Forgotten Refugees.” A Krav Maga (Israeli self-defense) instructor will lead two sessions for different age groups, and our own Eli Davidyan will instruct participants in cooking traditional Israeli foods. Our now customary session on Jewish meditation along with a hall of displays by our students and teachers related to their trip to Israel rounds out the morning. Come celebrate Israel at the final Community Learning Day of the academic year!

Community Learning Day -- Sunday, March 21, 2010

On Sunday, Mar. 21, we welcome Sheldon Low, a new face in Jewish rock, in a concert presented with students in the Temple B’nai Abraham Religious School. As a complement to some Yiddish songs that will be part of the concert, Alan Pierce and Saul Axelrod will hold a discussion on the golden age of Yiddish Radio. To contrast with the concert and the radio, we will again hold a session on Jewish meditation. Join us for this special Community Learning Day!

Mishloach Manot for Purim -- Reminder

Send Purim greetings to your synagogue friends with a Mishloach Manot gift box from Temple B’nai Abraham for only $3 per greeting!

Mishloach Manot is the practice of sending gifts of food at Purim. From “jewishappleseed.org,”

One of the nicest traditions on Purim is that of giving a gift of food to friends.  This is called “Mishloach Manot” (Mish-LO-ach Ma-NOTE) — the sending of gifts.  This phrase is often shortened to “Shalach Manot” (Sha-LACH Ma-NOTE) or “Shalach Manos” (SHA-lach MA-nos).  According to Jewish law, one should give a gift of two different types of food, one of which is prepared (cooked or baked) to at least one person.  This law

More Jewish Meditation, Anyone?

The community learning day Jewish Meditation session was really wonderful. It got me thinking about how we can get Seth Castleman to join us again. I spoke to Deb about how we might make it happen. So I’m throwing this question out to everyone who attended and anyone who did not but wished they had: Would you be willing to pay a $10 drop-in fee to have him come once a month? Share your thoughts in comments, or email me. If we can get about 20 people who are willing, we could try to make it happen.
