Pet Service Rescheduled to Sunday November 6 at 11:30 AM
Dear Members of Temple B’nai Abraham, My name is Max Blake and last year I became a Bar Mitzvah on October 9. As part of my mitzvah project, I hosted the first TBA Pet Service. Please join me and Rabbi Adler for the second Pet Service on the front lawn of the synagogue on our new date of Sunday, November 6 at 11:30 a.m. (rescheduled from October 30 due to the weather conditions). Everyone is invited to bring their pets–real or stuffed–for a special service, which will include a prayer for our furry friends. I am asking everyone to bring something to donate to the North East Animal Shelter. Pet food, toys or blankets are just a few ideas. I am so excited about this project and hope you will join me at the TBA Pet Service. Thank You, Max Blake
[NOVA] The Bible’s Buried Secrets
Airing Wednesday April 13 at 9 pm on PBS An archeological detective story traces the origins of the Hebrew Bible. In this landmark two-hour special, NOVA takes viewers on a scientific journey that began 3,000 years ago and continues today. The film presents the latest archeological scholarship from the Holy Land to explore the beginnings of modern religion and the origins of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. This archeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when, and why? How did the worship of one God—the foundation of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—emerge? See the original program website for more related features.
50 Essential Works of Jewish Fiction
Jewcy, Feb. 9 Jason Diamond writes: “Jews have done a pretty good job holding up our end of the People of the Book deal, especially over the last 100 years. Jewish writers from all over the globe have contributed fiction in different languages, influencing the form in ways immeasurable and helping to document the Jewish experience better than most history books. Our criteria for this list was any work written by a Jewish author or dealing heavily with Jewish topics and themes after 1911.”… (Taken from American Libraries Direct 2/16/2011)

Mah Jong Anyone?
A recent Sunday chat in the lobby of TBA led to the idea of a Mah Jong group. Many TBA members would like to learn to play and we are told many TBA members know how. If you are interested in learning/teaching/playing Mah Jong on an informal basis, please contact Amy Blake. We are hoping we have enough interest to have a Ladies’ Mah Jong night when the Men’s Club has their next Poker Night!
Used to be that what defined us all was our “word”
Used to be that what defined us all was our “word”; not sure anymore. What’s changed, or how has it happened? Contracts are made to be broken with so many outs, ambiguities, etc. Risk factors in offerings take up half the documentation and sellers and their agents rely on the “buyer beware” out. Tell me, how in God’s little green acre can Goldman Sachs claim (without giggling)that the product they were selling/recommending to others was o.k. to be shorting themselves as their buyers/clients were ‘sophisticated’ and responsible for their own behavior? Is that what was told them at HBS or is that the new norm? Now we have a well respected/regarded Senator opting out of running for his next term because he’s fed up with the shenanigans of his fellow office holders. The gridlock, infighting, finger-pointing, ad nauseum is almost insane/inane as we head for the toilet. So I ask my fellow congregants for comments, suggestions;…..or is this for the grand kids to figure out? Marshall Sterman
In honor of Judaism and Disabilities Month
In Honor of Judaism and Disabilities Month A Blessing for Hearing and Thinking A number of years ago, an eleven year old girl refused to begin her Bat Mitzvah lessons until her parents and I made a plan for the brother’s Bar Mitzvah. Her brother had been confined to a wheel chair all of his life, and was not able to communicate with others in the same way as you and I can. Even though he had a multiple of physical and mental ailments that required constant daily care by his parents, he lacked nothing in relation to the love and devotion shown to him by his family – and especially his sister who wanted nothing less for her brother in regards to this life changing rite of passage. We found a way to honor Jesse’s abilities to feel the texture of the Torah parchment as a recognition of his blessing the Torah by a series of recordings that were triggered by his hand at the appropriate time. It is this Torah that filled his heart, and hours, along with tears of joy at being able to celebrate the joys in life despite his disabilities. As I watched him dance … Continue reading
