Community Learning Day This Sunday 11-13-11
Rabbi Alison Adler starts us off at her first Community Learning Day at TBA with the theme of the Sh’ma. Join us on Sunday, November 13, for all kinds of activities that highlight this special and important prayer. Rabbi Kevin Hale, a traditionally trained sofer, will be conducting two workshops about what goes into writing a Torah scroll. The preschool workshop will include a special storyteller, Susie Magoozy, as well as our own Rabbi Adler, who will help the children make Sh’ma pillowcases. In other classes, older children and adults can learn to make their own Tallit, including the tzitzit that are described in the Sh’ma, and their own mezuzot. The Davidyans will bring Torah to life in a Time Tent. The morning finishes off with a spirited concert from Shirat Hayam’s Ruach Rally Band. Join us!! About TBA’s Community Learning Day The Community Learning Days are designed to bring all generations of our congregation and the greater North Shore Jewish Community together to enjoy educational programming. The program is free and open to the public. Generally, our Community Learning Days feature one or more special guests complemented by individuals from our community who share their expertise, skill, interest or talent. … Continue reading
Social Action Committee minutes, 10-30-11
The first meeting of the newly reformed Social Action Committee met on Sun., Oct. 30. The committee still welcomes any interested volunteers — please contact Rabbi Adler if you are interested. Rabbi Adler began by discussing the roots of social action, which led to a discussion about all of the attendees’ interests. Some of the thoughts: environmental issues sustainability and community gardens support for local families with needs asylum for immigrants homelessness incorporating a program into the religious school Various possibilities will be researched for further discussion. In the meantime, the first priority is to support the Feed the Hungry program, sponsored by TBA, generally on the third Monday of the month, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The next date is Mon., Dec. 19, as the November date is being handled by another group. The next meeting of the SAC will be Sun., Dec. 4, 11 AM. Please join us.
Reminder: Send Photos of Your Mezuzot!
Do you have a beautiful mezuzah hanging in your home? We are looking for photos of mezuzot of all types — fancy, simple, for children, for newlyweds, for any reason. Last chance! We need all photos by Nov. 4. Send photos of your mezuzot to Lisa Horowitz. They will be used for a special display. Thank you!
Pet Service Rescheduled to Sunday November 6 at 11:30 AM
Dear Members of Temple B’nai Abraham, My name is Max Blake and last year I became a Bar Mitzvah on October 9. As part of my mitzvah project, I hosted the first TBA Pet Service. Please join me and Rabbi Adler for the second Pet Service on the front lawn of the synagogue on our new date of Sunday, November 6 at 11:30 a.m. (rescheduled from October 30 due to the weather conditions). Everyone is invited to bring their pets–real or stuffed–for a special service, which will include a prayer for our furry friends. I am asking everyone to bring something to donate to the North East Animal Shelter. Pet food, toys or blankets are just a few ideas. I am so excited about this project and hope you will join me at the TBA Pet Service. Thank You, Max Blake
Reminder! Join Us for the TBA “Sukkah Raising”!
A barn raising is held when a community comes together to help a community member build his/her new barn. In TBA tradition, the community comes together each fall to build the temple Sukkah. Our Sukkah Raising will take place on Monday, October 10, 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM. We need your help and your joy to make our Sukkah beautiful. There are many tasks to be done, and many skills needed. We need tools and strength to get the “schach,” the plant material that is used to cover the open roof of the Sukkah, and to hang the muslin panels that become the sides. We need an eye for design, to entwine the plastic and silk flowers, fruit and leaves around the columns of the gazebo, and to come up with creative ways to decorate the sides of the Sukkah. And we need donations of bales of hay, a couple of pumpkins or gourds, and new plastic fruit or silk leaves and flower vines to replace anything that was ruined in last year’s weather. Children and adults are all welcome. It’s a mitzvah! Snacks will be served to those who help out. RSVP is helpful but not required. Contact Lisa … Continue reading
Jewish Journal Fundraiser
Dear friends, As many of you know, I’m happy to serve as Vice President of the Jewish Journal Board of Overseers. It is in that role that I ask you to support the Journal’s fundraiser, Honoring Healthcare Heroes Performing Medical Mitzvahs. The event will be held on Sunday, June 12, at 7 pm at the Peabody Marriott. The Journal is paying tribute to medical professionals in our community who contribute their time and efforts abroad to help those in need. Their mitzvoth include free eye surgery, urology, gynecology and dialysis care, as well as general well-being services. In addition, the many local healthcare heroes who perform countless mitzvoth right here at home are being honored with tribute ads in the Journal’s June 9 special supplement. It’s not too late to honor a healthcare hero, either by purchasing a ticket for the dessert reception on June 12 or by taking out a small ad honoring your own hero (to be published in the Journal after the event). You can call the Journal at 978-745-4111. I also ask that you consider making a donation to support the Journal, which is delivered free of charge to every Jewish and interfaith Jewish family in … Continue reading
