On Friday, Feb. 3, the Social Action Committee sponsored an oneg to honor Linda Helman for redirecting her fund in memory of her late husband, Stephen B. Helman, to Monday Night Suppers. Linda read this beautiful and moving poem to commemorate the evening:
“For those of you who do not know
I write my thoughts in rhyme.
So to thank you all for coming tonight
May take a little time.
It’s been 10 years that Steve is gone
But his legacy remains.
The Social Action Committee asks for your continued support in collecting food for Beverly Bootstraps Food Pantry and the Jewish Food Pantry. This month, we are focusing on soup, in honor of the Patriots and the Soup-er Bowl.
Drop off canned or non-perishable soups in the bins in the front lobby near the office. Your community thanks you!
Do not miss these wonderful community happenings at TBA.
A priest, a minister and a rabbi walk into a bar …
On January 28, the Sisterhood — through the hard work of Julie Zieff, Judy Matfess, Linda Goodspeed, and many other volunteers — held yet another very successful Comedy Night, with nationally known comedian Dan Naturman. It was preceded by music provided by the Joy of Sax, led by congregant Steven Swartz on the saxophone.
Aside from being both a great night of entertainment and a fundraiser for TBA, the idea of a night of comedy in a synagogue made me think about the role comedy plays in Jewish life in general, and why comedy, especially American comedy, has been dominated for the past century by Jewish writers and performers.
Much has been written about this subject. As Nathan Ausubel writes in the introduction to his book Treasury of Jewish Humor, “First you laugh at a Jewish joke or quip. Then, against your will, you suddenly fall silent and thoughtful. And that is because Jews are so frequently jesting philosophers. A hard life made them realists, realists without illusions.”
The February Bulletin Digest collects selected website posts and event notices for the month in a single document. For updated listings, please check the TBA website regularly.
Join us on Sunday, February 5, for a Community Learning Day featuring piano-pounding rocker Jay Rapoport and storyteller and environmental educator David Arfa. Practice pilates for families and for “mature bodies,” and learn about eco Kashrut with Rabbi Adler. Or make crafts with your kids (preschoolers to grade 1) during a 10 a.m. workshop with music and stories. Something for everyone!About TBA’s Community Learning DayThe Community Learning Days are designed to bring all generations of our congregation and the greater North Shore Jewish Community together to enjoy educational programming. The program is free and open to the public. Generally, our Community Learning Days feature one or more special guests complemented by individuals from our community who share their expertise, skill, interest or talent. This program is generously sponsored by the Alan Kaplan Memorial Enrichment Fund. I would like to share an update on TBA’s social and environmental justice programming.
TBA members are very generous with their time when it comes to the Monday Night Suppers at the First Baptist Church. These suppers are an opportunity for our community to reach out to those in need. Last month, about 30 people from TBA came out to cook and serve. Thank you to all of our volunteers, and especially to Dave Carnevale, who does most of the shopping and schlepping each month.
The Social Action Committee has taken on the responsibility of making sure that there continues to be funding for the food. To that end, on Friday, February 3, the Social Action Committee will sponsor an oneg in honor of the Helman family for redirecting their fund to the Monday Night Suppers. Linda Helman thought this would be a good way to honor the memory of her husband, Stephen, because he was committed to the Monday Night Suppers. The theme of Shabbat services that evening will be Homelessness and Economic Justice. I hope you can join us. Donations may also be made to the Stephen Helman Monday Night Supper Fund through the TBA office.
This month is also Tu B’Shevat, a celebration of trees, environmental justice, and the coming of spring (yes, it will come!). In addition to Tu B’Shevat being the theme of our Community Learning Day on February 5, we are partnering with Temple Shalom of Salem for a program on February 8 at 5:30 p.m., where we will learn about the holiday, eat pizza, and plant seeds for Temple Shalom’s new community garden.
TBA will join members of Temple Shalom for a joint Tu B’Shevat program at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, at the Salem synagogue.
Come for pizza and drinks and the planting of bean seeds for Temple Shalom’s brand-new
community garden, Gan Rut (see below).
Rabbi Adler and Leora Mallach from Beantown Jewish Gardens will teach about the holiday of Tu B’Shevat, a celebration of trees, nature and spring. David Gass of the Highland Coalition in Lynn will talk about how to leverage a garden to create community.
The program is free. Bring your children! RSVP to Rabbi Adler, so they know how much pizza to order.
